Teachers issue 7-day ultimatum after failed negotiations with Teachers Service Commission

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has given the Teachers Service Commission a seven-day ultimatum to reconvene talks, failure to which it will resort to unspecified action.

This is after the commission postponed scheduled talks with the union which was set for Friday to address among other issues the contentious transfer of teachers.

Through a statement, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion observed that the postponement of the meeting showed disinterest on the part of TSC coupled with mischief and distrust.

“We acknowledge with utter disappointment receipt of your letter on the above subject. You will note that as early as July 2018, we formally raised several pertinent issued affecting harmonious industrial relations which called for urgent interventions,” he stated.

“Both parties had agreed that further promotion was an inevitable action by the employer, only for the TSC to introduce CPG policies and appraisals which utterly contradicts the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and Code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT),” he explained. He stated that should the teachers’ employer fail to re-convene, steps and actions will be taken without reference to them.
