Students want Chicken, Babu Owino Tells Prof Mbithi

Incoming UoN VC Prof. Mbithi

Incoming UoN VC Prof. Mbithi

Barely days after the Government appointed Prof Peter Mbithi to replace Prof. George Magoha as the University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, the students are making their wishes known to the new VC.

Speaking to Capital Campus, SONU Chairman Babu Owino urged the new VC to look into the welfare of students, including planned fee hike, accommodation, and increase HELB allocation.

“We accept him fully but he must be loyal to comrades, ensure fee is not increased to comrades as per the government directive. From January, he should ensure that HELB is increased, new hostels are built, and ensure comrades eat chicken not eating with and like chicken,” said Babu.

On her part, SONU Vice Chair Irene Kendi said she was overwhelmed by Prof Mbithi’s appointment, promising him support and that it was the best thing that has happened at UoN.

“He is the best thing that has happened to the University of Nairobi to close the year with,” said Irene, who is optimistic that the new VC will serve students’ interests.

“My happiness is to see Prof Mbithi support more student events, collaborate with the private sector and put up more hostels, ensure that the university security has improved and above all support my women empowerment programs,” added Irene, who is famously known as Mama Yao for her aggressiveness in addressing issues affecting students.

Robert Mboya, a student leader from Parklands Campus says Prof Mbithi’s appointment cements UoN’s exceptional performance as a world-class University. He challenged the VC to address the accreditation of some engineering courses that had been delisted by the Engineering Board of Kenya.

“The selection of Mbithi stamps the universities credence as the top learning institution in East and Central Africa. He should ensure the immediate registration of all engineering courses by EBK,” he told Capital Campus.

According to Wambui Nyutu, SONU’s legal mind, Prof Mbithi should prioritize students’ security.

“It is unfortunate that comrades in the recent past have been unsafe; raped, murdered, and harassed,” lamented the third year Law student.

Prof Mbithi takes over the University administration of UoN from Prof Magoha, whose term expires at the end of this year after being the VC for 10 years.

Until his appointment, Prof Mbithi has been Deputy VC, A&F, a position he has held since 2005. He holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Msc. and PhD from the University of Nairobi, and Master of Veterinary Science from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.
