According to the University of Nairobi over 400 students from Mwingi Central have been awarded scholarships.

The students, drawn from 42 universities in the country received scholarships worth Kshs. 6 million from the Mwingi Central, Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

The cheques were presented by the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Joe Mutambu, to the deans of students from the universities.

In his remarks, Mutambu said that there is need to understand the financial challenges university students face while pursuing higher education. He noted that Kenya cannot sustain education without funding and if the nation is to develop, education must not be eliminated. He called on other members of parliament to support students through the development funds in place.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Prof. Peter Mbithi, noted that funding of higher education has continued to be a challenge and that there is need for others to emulate the example set by Mwingi Central. He called on individuals and organizations to support students especially from poor backgrounds who need scholarships and bursaries to access higher education.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs, Prof. Isaac Mbeche, urged students not to take any financial support for granted. He called on them to study hard so that in future, they can give back to their communities.

Present was the Chairman of the CDF Board, Elias Mbau, students and deans of students from various universities.
