We have all suffered the agony of a low battery phone which essentially we are excommunicated from the rest of the world. You can’t send or receive calls or texts, no whatsapp and in Kenya especially, no Mpesa. It’s worse if you have no access to a power source.
But two South Korean students/designers Kyuho Song and Boa Oh have come up with a solution that intuitively converts solar power to a power source. The solar powered window socket is composed of a base of mini solar panels and a suction cup that ensures effective adhesion to virtually any transparent glass surface that is exposed to the sun.
Though the window socket is still considered a concept and there are still some issues with storage and how to make this product more energy efficient, we can’t deny the fact that this is a very bright idea. I personally already love it and can’t wait for it to be in the market.
The designers told Yanko that any window can be used including planes, cars or building windows. “
“Thus this product was designed to draw a socket used indoors outdoors. We tried to design a portable socket so that users can use it intuitively without special training.”
This gadget would be handy especially in emerging markets. In Africa, it would be great to have it seeing we have sun throughout the year and electricity is not exactly reliable or in most cases, non existent.
The window socked is a dream for many people because it seems to be pocket friendly and for students like me, apart from allowing me to save money it would allow me to “dedicate” myself to networking and researching on my mobile devices as much as I want.
Some people think that this will never work, they argue that such a small device could only produce a small amount of power and it would never charge not even a simple Tablet; they call it the “latest exploitation of the “go green” phenomenon”.
As for me I can only hope that the designers improve its performance as soon as possible, make it available all over the world and at a friendly price because there is nothing worse than staying bored all day, not being able to reach people or to be reached, not being able to network, not being able to research simply because you forgot to charge your mobile phone or tablet.
