Safety First Agenda On The Forefront AS IDPA Shooting Championship Gets Underway

On the side-line of the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) African Championships, Chief Safety Officer Sammy Onyango has come out to defend gun owners.

Incidents of prominent people misusing their fire arms have created a negative public perception about gun owners. The ongoing competition aims to promote responsible gun ownership, with shooting scenarios that simulate real-life situations that will help gun owners defend themselves and their neighbors.

“We are a community of safe fire arm handlers and our motto is to ensure a safe fire arm handling across the nation and we envisage to be advocating the same across Africa,” Adds Onyango.

The championships kicked off on April 5, 2023, with the Chief Safety Officer’s (CSO) shooting. On the range, CSOs act as both referees and public safety officers ensuring strict gun discipline is followed. On Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday April 6, other safety officers also went through the whole course. The event will climax on Saturday and Sunday April 8 and 9, with all other shooters participating. NGAO Kenya Defensive Pistol Federation are hosting the event at their Kirigiti Shooting Range, Chairman Martin Chengo said.

“We are excited that this Easter weekend our dream of hosting the African Championships is becoming a reality. We started by bidding to host the championship and we were given the honor and thanks to the government for coming out to fund this great course,” Says Chengo.
