In an effort to make to reflect a broader use of modern English, controversial comedian Russell Brand will join Dizzee Rascal in the new English A-level syllabus to be studied from September 2015. According to reports from the Huffington Post, the change in syllabi was approved by the British exam board Oxford, Cambridge, and Royal Society of Arts (OCR).
This is despite several issues including Russell Brand’s select committee inquiring into drug use. Moreover, according to The Independent, sources within the then Education Secretary office dismissed the reports that they would be approved when they were first put forward.
But with the newly approved syllabi beginning in September, the hopes are that students will read the recommended books. “By setting questions which relate to the wider themes, students were previously able to get away with learning only particular sections.”
