Nicki Minaj’s smash hit single Super Bass has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The monster hit hits the milestone more than a decade after release.
Released as part of the deluxe version of her Pink Friday album, the song saw the rapper showcase her versatility by crossing over to the sing-song bubblegum pop world, after making her mark as a hard-hitting lyrical rapper already on the album and the two mixtapes-2007’s Playtime Is Over and 2009’s Beam Me Up Scotty– that preceded it.
“#SuperBassDiamond Thank you for over a decade of support. #Barbz (special thx to Ester Dean, Kane, Juice, Taylor Swift, Sofia Grace & Rosie, Ellen, Young Money/Cash Money & Republic. This one was released b4 the streaming era, so millions of fans actually purchased the song. 🎀 I’m so grateful for you guys. Sending love & blessings your way,” she posted.
Peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and released as the 5th single from PinkFriday, Super Bass cemented Minaj’s place as a force to be reckoned with.
It also earned her a spot as the highest-charting rap record by a solo female artiste since Missy Elliott’s 2002 hit Work It. It would later exponentially take over, with fellow celebrities like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Tracee Ellis Ross covering the song.
The video entailed the playful nature of the lyrics, with the rapper sporting her signature Barbie-pink hair, as did her backup dancers.
A Diamond certification implies that a record has sold 10,000,000 units. Minaj is now the only rapper with a US Diamond record and a Latin Diamond record for her Karol G collaboration Tusa.
