Music service Mdundo to award artists according to number of downloads

African music platform Mdundo has officially launched a mileage recognition initiative for artists.

Over the years, one of Africa’s music service Mdundo has made efforts to recognize artists with their annual Mdundo Awards. Now the platform will recognize it’s most popular artists through its Mdundo Download Awards (Platinum, Gold, and Silver.)

According to Mdundo Kenya Artists Relations Manager Irene Soti, the East African Music scene has been showing consistent growth. 2018 solely, saw the rise of new music and artists who actually managed to maintain relevance and influence all through the year like Kenya’s Ethic crew and Tanzanian Nandy. Those who had earlier on ruled the music entertainment space also have a lot of new entertaining content to offer. The big names like Kenya’s Nyashinski, Uganda’s Chameleon and Tanzania’s Vanessa Mdee are constantly working on a new release.

Mdundo Download Awards has 3 categories of validity. Artists’ popularity growth is acknowledged by the number of music downloads they accumulate collectively on the Mdundo platform. The different levels of popularity and artists who achieved the numbers for Kenya are recognized as:

1.Platinum Awards – Over 1 Million Downloads which Kenya’s Sauti Sol, Nyashinski, Khaligraph Jones, Bahati, and Mercy Masika dominated.

2.Gold Awards – Over 500 Thousand Downloads featuring Kenyan artists like Gloria Muliro, Guardian Angel and Ken wa Maria.

3.Silver Awards –  Over 100 Thousand Downloads which was attained by Avril, Naiboi, Octopizzo, The Kansoul and H_art the band.
