Multimedia University students engage police in running battles

The protests by Multimedia University students have turned violent after police stormed the institution, while firing live bullets and teargas at the students.

Hundreds of the students are engaging police in running battles in and around the institution, paralyzing transport to and from Ongata Rongai.

The students are protesting the death of their colleague who was one of the four passengers killed in the Sunday accident on Lang’ata Road.

“These vehicles which we call Nganyas and Manyangas have killed one of our comrades and I as the President want to sanction all comrades plus the Rongai fraternity, we will not board any of these vehicles. We cannot continue to hear about the deaths of our comrades. The reckless driving along this road is very bad,” the student leader stated.

At least eight passengers are still admitted to hospital following the accident that involved a matatu from Ongata Line Sacco whose 100 buses were de-registered Monday.

“Today we have come here as Multi Media University students to communicate our disgrace and disappointment to these guys. They have been driving recklessly and we want to inform them that we are angry about the matter,” another student stated.

The National Transport and Safety Authority has directed police to impound any vehicle from the company until further notice, with police still hunting down for the driver who is still at large.
