Black Widow directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Scarlett Johansson is FINALLY out in theaters. It’s also out on Disney+ but sadly, the platform is not available in Africa.
The newest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is Natasha Romanoff’s solo film; Black Widow. We’ve seen Romanoff played by Scarlett Johansson, in all four of The Avengers movies and in seven MCU movies overall. It’s fair to say the character is familiar, and her standalone film is a look into her origin story.
Romanoff has no superpowers; she’s a spy turned Avenger and her childhood seemed normal until it’s revealed that her parents were Russian Spies; her “father” is Alexie, The Red Guardian, played by David Harbour and her “mother” is the top tier eccentric scientist Melina, played by Rachel Weisz. She and her sister Yelena, played by Florence Pugh, were soon going to become deadly trained Russian spies.
Black Widow takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War so this movie is long overdue and is a prequel and a goodbye in the same breath. While the action scenes were cinematically pleasing, the film did not go into Romanoff’s character development enough. The star-studded cast did a fantastic job; the banter was witty and hilarious; Pugh’s accent and acting were award-winning and of course Harbour and Weisz gave engaging performances, so much so that this ensemble cast made the movie an action-packed ensemble flick, instead of a deeper look into Natasha Romanoff’s origin story.
Super fans of the MCU may be disappointed in the movies lack of comic book accuracy while other fans may enjoy the revenge plot, the heist-like feel and the action choreography. Comedy fans will love the funny quips between the characters and regular movie-goers will just enjoy the film for films sake.
Remember, it’s a Marvel movie, there’s a post-credit scene!
