Med student tragically hacked to death in suspected lovers’ quarrel at Moi University

A female student pursuing medicine at Moi University was hacked to death early Tuesday by a man said to be her lover.

According to Capital News Ivy Wangeci, a sixth year-medicine student was hacked to death by her boyfriend who attacked her with an axe within the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. The man then tried to escape but was cornered and beaten up by boda-boda operators before he was rescued and handed over to police.

DCI boss George Kinoti says an investigation into the killing has been opened.

Moi University Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgei has condemned the incident, describing Tuesday as a “very sad day for us. This morning we lost one of us to an attack by an unknown assailant. We are working with the security forces to piece together what happened and we will update you in time…I want to request all of you to remain calm.”

The suspect’s mother has since spoken to the press; confirming the couple’s relationship woes that could have lead to the untimely death of the youth med student. In an interview with Standard Media, she said“They had been in a relationship even before my son got a job and the woman joined the school. He even wanted to marry her, but it seems they began having issues.” She went on to add, “I have never met the lady, but he used to show me her photos on phone… but recently, he came to me saying they had parted ways, a move which I told him was in the right direction because of their relationship issues.

Commenting on the disturbing news, she was shocked by the act her son committed. According to The Standard report, the woman said her son had never shown signs of being temperamental to the extent of killing someone and she was shocked by the incident. “It is so unusual of him because he cannot do such an act. What perturbs me is that he did not share with anyone about his trip to Eldoret, yet we were with him yesterday in Nairobi at 8 pm and he had not closed shop at a business where he works,” she said.

Students took to the streets to protest the death of the slain student.

Investigations are still ongoing while the young man is in police custody.
