KNEC Board dissolved after evidence shows officials involved in exam cheating

Top officials of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will be arrested and charged over rampant examinations leakage in schools after the board was dissolved Thursday morning.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i says the KNEC board has been dissolved forthwith after evidence showed that the officials were involved in the cheating menace in schools.

The nine officials who include Chef Executive Officer Joseph Kivilu are to be arrested immediately if they don’t present themselves to the police.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed former University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor George Magoha to be the chairman of the examinations council as part of measures to redeem its dented image.

The 2015 KCSE exams had the highest ever recorded number of cheats who were found out at 5,101 candidates compared to 2,975 in 2014; a 70 percent increase.

One hundred and seventy-one persons were arrested and charged in connection with the cheating; 34 of whom are teachers.

During the release of the 2015 KCSE results early March, Matiang’i said KNEC officials will be investigated.Investigations on what role KNEC officials may have played,

“The President gave us (Matiang’i and Nkaissery) until March 30 to conclude investigations and make recommendations on how to remedy the situation.”
