Kenyan DJ Pierra Makena Talks About Motherhood, Career Pause And Fame

For nearly two decades, Pierra Makena has been a powerhouse in the Kenyan entertainment scene. From acting in top TV shows to crashing through the male-dominated world of DJing, she’s done it all.

She has done it with boldness, grit, and unapologetic flair. But today, the 43-year-old star is eyeing something new: slowing down. And it’s not because she’s tired. It’s because she’s choosing herself and her daughter.

The reality TV star is the proud single mom of eight-year-old Ricca, and motherhood, she says, has shifted everything. “I’m very intentional about how I raise her,” she shared in an exclusive interview with Showmax. “I even turn down work if it doesn’t feel right for her.”

Critics often chime in with opinions about her parenting choices, especially around exposing her child to the public eye. But Pierra isn’t here for the noise. “Where were those opinions when we were struggling?” she asks. “Now that she’s thriving, everyone has something to say.”

She admits she can be overly protective panicking when Ricca climbs a table but she’s also committed to nurturing her daughter’s individuality. “If she loves music, I support that. I’m not going to force her to be a doctor. We’re living in a different world now.”

One thing she wishes someone had told her before becoming a mom? “That sleep is permanently cancelled!” she joked. “When they’re babies, you’re up all night. When they’re teens, you’re worrying. When they’re 21, you’re stressing about their choices.” But despite the exhaustion, she wouldn’t trade it for anything.

After conquering acting in roles on popular hits like ‘Tahidi High’, ‘Kina’, and ‘Disconnect’, DJing all over the world, and even reality TV on The Mommy Club NBO currently streaming on Showmax, Pierra is ready to take a breather. “Hopefully, I’ll scale back on my gigs to focus on myself and family,” she said.

Part of that shift includes exploring her softer side she dreams of taking Ricca to Disney, visiting the Sound of Music filming location in Austria, and even going skinny-dipping “somewhere no one knows me.” She laughs at the idea, but you can tell it’s more than a fantasy. It’s about freedom.

Pierra’s not just redefining career goals she’s reshaping what success looks like as a woman in her 40s. She’s candid about being a single mother and is crystal clear: “You don’t need a man to survive. I won’t take a man to court to force him to provide. I won’t beg someone to take care of the child I brought into this world. I’d rather hustle alone.”

Despite her public persona, Pierra reveals she’s actually an introvert. “People think I thrive in the spotlight because of my job, but I wouldn’t even be on social media if I weren’t in the public eye.”

As she embraces this next chapter, Pierra isn’t walking away from her passions she’s just choosing to do life on her own terms. Whether it’s acting, DJing, parenting, or turning down work to protect her child’s peace, one thing’s clear:

Pierra Makena isn’t slowing down, she’s leveling up.
