JKUAT launches first local laptop in Kenyan market

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), has rolled out Taifa Laptop to the Kenyan market. The computing device, conceived and designed under the TAIFA Brand, is a maiden product of the Nairobi Industrial and Technology Park (NITP), a subsidiary of JKUAT.

The laptop is the first locally conceived and designed computer to retail in Kenya. It is assembled from both custom and general parts. The National Treasury zero rated tax on computer parts in the June 2015 budget, providing JKUAT with a good opportunity to undertake local assembly of electronic devices.

The initiative is also expected to boost government’s efforts to mainstream ICT in the country’s productive system including education sector. The NITP, where the laptop is being assembled, is a Kenya Vision 2030 flagship project between JKUAT and the Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development (MOIED) and is the key vehicle providing infrastructure that supports growth of ideas into SME’s for the economy.

JKUAT began pursuing the establishment of an industrial park/innovation centre in 2010 in order to nurture viable commercial enterprises from research and innovation generated from the university. The Kenya Vision 2030 recognizes SME industrial and technology parks as important vehicles through which growth of Kenya’s manufacturing sector can be fast-tracked.
