Hip Hop Awards 2020: Meg Thee Stallion wins big, Pop Smoke remembered as Master P is honored

The just concluded BET Hip Hop Awards offered lots of highs even despite it being a difficult year for the Hip Hop community.

Hip Hop often used as a vessel to share the struggles of the oppressed and marginalized communities through out the world, and the BET awards ceremony was special and poignant even while respecting COVID restrictions.

Percy Robert Miller also known as Master P was honored for his work receiving the ‘I am Hip Hop’ award last night. As a pioneer in the Hip Hop genre, he founded No Limit Records now known as No Limit Forever Records. The rapper, actor, record producer, philanthropist, and former basketball player is also highly respected for his business acumen encouraging many others to invest wisely. In his speech, he spoke on the Black Lives Matter encouraging those championing the cause saying, ” we will get through this.”

Quavo also gave a tribute performance to fallen rap star Pop Smoke. He performed ‘Shake The Room’ and ‘Aim for the Moon’ as images of Pop Smoke were shared on the screen. The New York rapper Pop Smoke died at the age of 20 after an alleged home invasion in February 2020.The upcoming rapper was reportedly shot dead on Wednesday (19.02.20) morning at around 4:30am at a property in Hollywood Hills, California, after two men broke into the house, as earlier reported on The Sauce. Juice WRLD’s memory was also commemorated.

The show also featured a stand out cypher featuring Erykha Badu, Brandy, Teyana Taylor and H.E.R. The Legendary Bennie Man and Bounty Killer also performed alongside Skip Marley, Original Koffee and Shenseea.

Kenya’s Khaligraph Jones was honored with a nomination but unfortunately lost out to Stormzy in the ‘International Flow’ category. Other acts nominated in the category included South African Nasty C, Djonga from Brazil, Kaaris and Meryl from France, as well as Ms. Banks from United Kingdom.
