Award-winning actress Gabrielle Union has authored her debut Children’s picture book.

Titled ‘Welcome to the Party’, the star’s book cover, which features artwork by illustrator Ashley Evans, is inspired by the arrival of her daughter Kaavia James.
“I’m so excited to be releasing my first children’s book,” Union says. “Since the birth of my daughter … I’ve been even more inspired to create stories that are not only representative of the cultural melting pot we live in, but also celebrate life and the fun, teachable lessons that come at every age.”
Union and husband Dwyane Wade welcomed baby Kaavia via surrogate in November 2018.
The 47-year-old ‘Being MaryJane’ actress is popular for writing the 2017 bestseller memoir ‘We’re going to need more wine: Stories that are funny, complicated and true.
The book feature[s] personal stories and reflections on a range of topics that continue to define the contemporary landscape: sexuality, womanhood, friendship, race, marriage, and beauty. Union described the book as “the good, the bad, and the WTF.”
There seems to be a need for a lot more children books from authors with African heritage. Kenyan Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o last year debuted her children’s book dubbed ‘Sulwe’ which translates to star in her native Dholuo. The book centres on colourism.
