Egerton students sent home as lecturers’ strike bites

egertonEgerton University gave a mid-semester break to students on Wednesday as the lecturers continued with their nationwide strike.

The students said that a circular placed on the notice board instructed students to break for the mid-semester break up to Monday as learning was paralysed by the on-going strike, in which lecturers have accused the top university authorities of misappropriating the money for their salary increase.

The workers, who are camped at the university’s graduation square, vowed not to return to work until they are given their money by the university management, whose offices remained closed.

In Laikipia University, the lecturers boycotted classes while the students engaged themselves in a cultural week.

The national organising secretary of the lecturers’ union, UASU, Earnest Wayaya said the university staff will continue with the strike until they are given the money.

“The money was released in 2012 and issued to vice-chancellors of universities and university colleges but no worker has received any of that money,” he said.

He claimed that the money was spent on other things and that the management of universities should account for it.

“The money was put on wrong use and the concerned (vice chancellors) should be investigated and face the law,” he added.

The dons called on the anti-corruption authority to investigate the claims and prosecute those who misappropriated the funds.
