Dj at night, student by day. Meet Mr. Strathmore

Samuel Chomba is a 22-year-old, fourth year BBIT student at Strathmore University. Not only is he a student, but he’s also a DJ, whose stage name is DJ Mr. Incredible and to add to the growing list of his roles, he is the current holder of the Mr. Strathmore title. Olyvia Kahuthu got a few answers on how Sami handles his multiple lives, on and off campus.

So, who is Sami?

Well, I’m just a cool, simple, and chilled out guy. With me, what you see is what you get.

Why did you decide to vie for Mr. Strath?

I just wanted to try it; one doesn’t have to be skinny to be a model so I decided to change the game.

Why do you think you won? Is it because of your popularity?

(Chuckles softly) I think my confidence is what made me win. Plus, yeah, I say this with all humility, I’m popular.

Tell us about your out-of-school life.

Out of school, I’m a DJ. I love music, networking and hanging out with friends. I’ve always had a passion for music since I was young. Believe it or not, I used to sing in a church choir, and I danced most of my high school life. After that, I began to interact with people in the industry and I got the chance to DJ with DJ Crème. That’s how my career started; I didn’t go to any DJing Academy.

How has the experience been so far?

So far, it’s been great! I’ve been doing it for one year, professionally, and I’ve been able to do what many guys haven’t. I’ve been on the same stage with many of the who’s who in town.

So why study BBIT and not music or DJing?

The world is growing, technologically. Also, the DJ industry is evolving so IT and business skills are important to survive out there.

Does DJing interfere with your school work?

No, it doesn’t interfere with school since I mainly work on the weekends.

How have your family and friends reacted to your decision to be a DJ?

I have a lot of support from family and friends. It’s been amazing. Though it hasn’t been easy; one of the biggest challenges has been getting gigs. You really have to fight and work hard to get a slot.

Where exactly do you DJ?

I’m currently doing shows for Monster Radio, which is an online radio station, and I’ve done a couple of shows on Homeboyz . I also have regular gigs at Secrets Lounge (every Friday night) and at Skylux Lounge (Westlands), Club Sylk (CBD) and Psys (Westlands).

So what’s the future for DJ Incredible?

Being on TV and launching my own TV show to broaden my market.

Any parting shot?

In life, you’ll succeed where your heart wants to be.
