Comrades Sent Home After University Of Nairobi Is Shut Down

It has been an eerie 24 hours for the students of the University of Nairobi.

Known as one of the most prestigious universities in the region, UoN has been tangled up in major internal wrangles where the university students are at loggerheads with the administration. According to camera footage from the university premises, students burnt down the Students Welfare Authority office, in the wee hours of today, 3rd October 2017.The act of defiance of the campus management has now seen students sent packing indefinitely.

Recently presenting their displeasure with the local police, comrades blocked roads on Tuesday 26th October in protest of the growing cases of police brutality against Kenya’s youth.  Though it seems that the students may have various concerns a probe was launched following last week’s chaos at the university when police were accused of brutalizing students at their halls of residence and classes.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peter Mbithi made it known that the closure of the university was a precautionary measure  “following the deteriorating security situation.” With more updates shared on the institution’s Twitter account, it seems that the closure does not affect the campus administration. It still remains unclear whether the closure will affect the universities other satellite campuses. Resumption dates are still yet to be announced, with students previously being out of school earlier in the year, due to protests over student union politics.
