A positive working environment is something that we all need.
What works for one might not work for the other. Nevertheless, we can all agree on what is outright toxic, which unfortunately is the sad reality for some of us.
That the one place we spend almost 80% of our time is a place that does not bring us joy. I know that’s a heavy sentiment considering work is pretty structural but, come on, at least let me have peace of mind while at it no?
So how do you know that your place of work is toxic? Top of mind, you are unhappy to go there, your mind is constantly foggy at work, you feel the need to deliberately keep away from people and lastly, you have thought of quitting one too many times.
Unfortunately, in these times we are in, quitting is not necessarily an option meaning we are left to figure out how to fix either the place or our mindset.
However today, we are focusing on the external things so let’s get into some of the things you can do to maintain a level head at work.
Create boundaries
You need to set them. This way people know your limits when it comes to your space. This will work 100% because people are the number one cause of toxicity at work. How they speak to you, what they say about you, and how they treat you goes a long way in determining how you feel at work.
Escalate
Some things need to be escalated, full stop. Everyone is out for themselves at work which means that sometimes someone will infringe on your rights to get their way.
Some are fueled by pure malice, competition, and others personal beefs. Don’t be a victim, talk to your line manager about it and solve it civilly.
Get away from the toxicity
That’s right, move away from the toxicity. Find another desk, space or move entirely to a new organization.
Your peace of mind at work is very essential as that’s the only way you perform. So it is prudent to catch yourself slipping swiftly by identifying the tale-tale signs and figuring out what works best for you. Go forth and be great!.
