Students create an app to ensure you don’t date your relative

In a country where the population is 320,000, there is a high chance you might date your cousin. That’s why some bright Icelanders has come up with an app to avoid such embarrassing incidences from happening.

The application, developed in Iceland by software engineering students, allows you to test just how close you’re related to your date by bumping phones together.

It contains information on more than 720,000 people to ensure that users will avoid the most awkward bedroom situation possible.

The Islendiga-App — “App of Icelanders” — is an idea that may only be possible in Iceland, where most of the population shares descent from a group of 9th-century Viking settlers, and where an online database holds genealogical details of almost the entire population.

The students created the app for a “new creative uses” of the Islendingabok, or Book of Icelanders, an online database of residents and their family trees stretching back 1,200 years, reports newsday.com

However, it may be a case of too little too late for one unfortunate person, who posted on the app’s website: “If I’d had this in earlier, maybe I would not go home with my aunt.”

The tagline of the app is “make sure you bump the app before you bump in bed”.
