In YouTube’s recently launched YouTube Rewind, a recap of Kenya’s most popular videos indicated, a disappointing truth that Kenyans do not support Kenyan music.
Among the top five tracks listed on the YouTube Rewind Music Videos of 2017, were Latin-based musicians including Loius Fonsi, Dandy Yankee, and even Enrique Iglesias. With the least of the ten tracks listed garnering 53M views, there was no Kenyan produced track on the controversial top ten.
In a year that saw the release of numerous tracks from the O.G rapper Khaligraph Jones, Kibera’s finest Octopizzo re-introducing himself with his latest material including “Nu Afrika” and even the mega-hit Melanin by Sauti Sol, it is sad to say very few Kenyan tracks hit over 1 Million views on YouTube. Hopefully in the new year, Kenyans can offer more support to Kenyan artists and their music.
