The Kenyan Women in Film awards 2022 call out for nomination is here and how exciting!
The nominations opened on 15th December 2021 and close on midnight 15th January 2022.
This year, there is an additional four categories which are, Best actress kids category, Best producer documentary, Best producer human rights film and last but not least Best Digital content creator making them twenty four in total unlike last year which had only twenty categories.
The awards next year, aim to not only celebrate women, but also recognize that despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on the film industry, the woman filmmaker has persisted.

Women in Film Awards was inaugurated in 2020 at the Kenya National Theatre and it was an event that saw very many women filmmakers recognized for their work in the film industry, some of them who won in the inaugural event included Wambui Thimba as best costume designer, Brenda Wairimu as best Actress, Mercy Adundo as best Sound designer, Appie Matere as best producer, Naima Mungai as best set designer among others.

The winners of the second edition in 2021 also included, Lulu Hassan as best producer TV drama, Alison Nyawira as Best Actress Film, Wambui Gathee as Best Director film, Sheila Gathoni as Best Location sound recordist, Emma Nzioka as Best Cinematographer, Florence Muthoni as Best makeup artist among many others who were voted by the public in other categories.
“The idea behind the women in film awards was born on 15th November 2019, we had just attended a woman in film conference and many women film makers attended the Pre conference and one thing we asked ourselves was, where are this women, how come women film makers are being celebrated outside and not being celebrated here’’ Dr Susan Gitimu.
Dr Susan Gitimu, awards director, is a Lecturer from Kenyatta University department of Creative arts ,Film and media studies, who is working alongside her awards Manager Grace Muruthi , awards coordinator Mukami Maina, awards producer Ayisto Owendi and last but not least awards event organizer Denise Kibisu of Cogwheel creations.
The awards aim to empower women in Kenya to embrace Filmmaking, as well as create a market linkage for them to the larger market for film ,and generally to encourage women filmmakers in Kenya to present the world as they experience it through filming the world.
