South African singer Tyla has made history at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, held at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on September 11.
The Johannesburg-born sensation won the award for Best Afrobeats for her hit single “Water,” marking a milestone as the first female African artist and the first South African artist to clinch a VMA.

The 22-year-old artist, who has enjoyed a remarkable year with accolades from the Grammys, BET, Billboard, and a cover feature in Elle Magazine’s October issue, took to the stage to accept her award. “Thank you, MTV, my team, God, and everyone. This moment is monumental for Africa. The global success of ‘Water’ underscores the potential of African music on the world stage,” Tyla said.

She added, “While it’s an honor to win Best Afrobeats, I want to highlight that African music is incredibly diverse. Afrobeats has opened many doors, but we should celebrate the full spectrum of African music. I represent amapiano from South Africa and my culture. A big shout-out to all my fellow Afrobeats artists — Tems, Ayra Starr, Lojay, Rema, Wizkid, Burna Boy — we all shine together. Africa to the world!”
