South African pop sensation Tyla emerged as one of the standout stars at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, England, taking home three prestigious accolades.
The Truth or Dare singer, who was nominated in four categories including Best New Act, claimed awards for Best Afrobeats Act, Best African Act, and Best R&B Act.

Tyla’s family played a special role in her celebratory night, as she accepted the Best Afrobeats award alongside her sister Sydney Seethal. She took a moment to acknowledge her fellow nominees, saying, “I can’t believe it. All the nominees are incredible and have pushed Afrobeats so far.”
In the hotly contested R&B category, Tyla found herself up against industry heavyweights Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét. Visibly moved during her acceptance speech, she expressed genuine surprise at her victory.
“I’m just as shocked as you guys. Like, I don’t know what to do,” Tyla admitted emotionally. Reflecting on her music’s versatility, she added, “I know it’s so hard to categorise my music. I mix so many genres into one, but R&B has a huge influence on me, especially Aaliyah. She’s one of my idols.”

True to her admiration for the late icon, Tyla graced the ceremony wearing an outfit that paid homage to Aaliyah’s iconic Roberto Cavalli dress from the 2000 VMAs. Fighting back tears, she said, “The fact that I’m even winning this in her dress is like—oh my god.”
The evening was further highlighted by Tyla’s electrifying performances of her chart-topping hit Water and her latest track PUSH 2 START, captivating the audience.
