South African BET award winner Sho Madjozi impresses Kenyans with yet another Swahili rap song

South African hip hop star Sho Madjozi is making waves with her new hit ‘John Cena’ in which she raps in Swahili.

The 27-year-old stopped by the ‘A Colors Show’ studios in Berlin, Germany. In front of a turquoise backdrop, the artist performed her new song ‘John Cena’. She is the fourth South African artist to appear on the German show.

She slid throughout the performance with the customary vigour that is now synonymous to the artist. Obeying the gqom beat’s orders, Madjozi gyrated, showing off her personality, light footedness and impressed with her Swahili rap prowess.

‘John Cena’ is a previously unreleased single from Sho Madjozi, who released her debut album ‘Limpopo Champions League’ last year.

As reported by The Sauce, she recently became the fourth South African artist to win a B.E.T award for Best New International Act and the superstar made history as the first female South African artist to win a BET. She also got recognition as the Female Artist of The Year award at the South African Music Awards, the country’s equivalent of the Grammys in June 2019.

This is not the first time that the ‘Wakanda Forever’ hitmaker has wowed fans from East Africa with her grasp of Swahili in her music despite being South African. She is acclaimed in East Africa for her hit song ‘Huku’ which was released in May 2018.

Sho Madjozi real name Maya Wegerif, named after Maya Angelou has lived in South Africa and Tanzania, where she learnt to speak Kiswahili. The musician doesn’t speak just one but almost four languages, which are; isiZulu, Tsonga, Sepedi, English, French, and Swahili.

The Multi-lingual rapper who has performed in Kenya twice has a degree in creative writing and African studies from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts in the USA which she got through a scholarship.
