Beloved rapper DMX has passed away at the age of 50, surrounded by his family.
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Earl Simmons popularly known as DMX, who passed away at the age of 50.
His death was confirmed in an official statement from DMX’s family and the White Plains Hospital. “We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days,” reads the statement. “Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him.”
“Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever,” continues the statement. “We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle, and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”
On April 2nd, DMX suffered an overdose that resulted in a heart attack.
According to CNN, DMX (Dark Man X) began rapping in the early 1990s and released his debut album, “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot,” in 1998. With the deaths of fellow rappers The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur before he burst on the scene, DMX became one of the reigning stars of hardcore hip hop and was the premier artist signed to the Ruffhouse Records label.
DMX was known for various hits including ‘X Gon Give It Ya,’ ‘Ruff Ryders’ Anthem’, ‘Where The Hood At’ and many more. Aside from his own personal successes, DMX was known for his support of other talents under the RUuff Ryders umbrella Eve, Drag-On, and Jin.
Various artists have spoken up since the news of his death. Friend and producer for DMX, Swizz Beats wrote, “I’m truly beyond devastated !!!!!! But I’m so happy my brother is no longer in pain. I watched him take everyone’s pain and make it his own. I send my love and support to his entire family. My brother we will never let them forget your name and you will live forever F.A.M.E. Long live King DMX the great a.k.a. my brother 4 Life.”
On Twitter, Missy Elliott wrote, “Even though you had battles you touched so many through your music, and when you would pray so many people felt that! This is heavy for the hip-hop family but your legacy lives on and spirit. Continued Prayers for X family and friends for strength/healing.”
LL Cool J said of DMX, “You did everything you came to do. You impacted the world. You went from the underdog to the Big Dog. I’m honored we got to work together. You are a unique soul Earl Simmons. Your music will be here 1,000 years from now and fire, passion, pain and positive energy you put into every word ; will always be celebrated, remembered and enjoyed by our culture.
