Newly launched ‘East Africa Got Talent’ to showcase local talent to the world

Kenya will soon be front and center of a new TV talent show dubbed ‘East Africa Got Talent’.

The much anticipated ‘East Africa Got Talent’ was launched today, Tuesday (09.04.19) at the Movenpick Hotel in Nairobi. The star-studded launch was attended by Tourism CS Najib Balala, ICT CS Joe Mucheru, Sports and Culture CS, Amina Mohammed, KFCB boss Ezekiel Mutua, Ugandan Comedienne Anne Kansiime and Clouds Media International CEO Joseph Kusaga. The event was hosted by radio personality Larry Asego.

The newly launched talent show which is affiliated to popular Britain Got Talent creator Simon Cowell has partnered with Safaricom and other institutions like the Kenya Film Classification Board, Mpesa and Clouds Media to bring the show to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. ‘East Africa Got Talent’ just like its U.K and American counterparts will showcase different talents such as singing and acrobatics.

The popular comedienne Anne Kansiime is set to host the show that will run for 10 weeks and will be aired on Citizen TV in Kenya. The auditions will be held in each of the four participating countries while the semifinals and finals will be filmed in Kenya.

The Kenyan auditions will be from the 11th of May 2019 at the KICC with Kshs 5 million cash prize up for grabs. Those who wish to participate can send a one minute WhatsApp video of your performance with your name, age, and country to +254703437903.

In a tweet, Safaricom’s Chief Customer Officer Sylvia Mulinge said that they were proud to announce their sponsorship of the iconic show and that it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase what Kenya and East Africa is made of.

In Africa, the franchise was first launched in South Africa and Nigeria, which was later discontinued. The Got Talent franchise has spin-offs in over 58 countries, in what is now referred to as the ‘Got Talent’ format, similar to that described by FremantleMedia of the ‘Idol’ and ‘The X Factor’ formats.

In April 2014, the format was named the world’s most successful reality TV format ever by the Guinness World Records.
