US-based Kenyan artiste Lovince McKenzie is not the one to play with. The vibrant and ambitious artiste sat down with The Sauce and let us in on a few things.
“My sound is influenced by his international influences from the US, Europe and across Sub-Saharan Africa. Having worked with quite a number of artistes from many places around the world, my view and approach has become more dynamic by the day,” He says.
The ‘Down’ singer draws inspiration from the likes of Akon, Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and DJ Maphorisa, some of whom he rubs shoulders with on the regular. “I have lots of new music coming out in the span of the rest of the year off of my EP, and each song will have a video to boot. I have already shot all the videos,” He intimates.
In the event that he had the power to make any reforms in the Kenyan music industry, what would they be? “Juxtaposing the situation here and the state of things in countries I have visited, we have a long way to go. If I could, I would easily avail access to creatives and every other talented person. As a case in point, the South African has a kitty for musicians dubbed ‘Sampra,’ which funds projects by artistes in the country. Given the almost nonexistent support Kenyan musicians get from the government yet we still somehow prevail, imagine the kind of implication such backup would spell for us,” Adds Lovince.
He has worked with a slew of Kenyan producers including Alex Big Soul and Ulopa. He promises quality music and looks to cross borders and take over the African continent, citing Burna Boy and Wizkid’s mega international success as the benchmark.
