Kabogo kicked, slapped campus girl Mercy – witness

Another witness testifying at an inquest into the death of university student Mercy Keino on Tuesday alleged that Juja Member of Parliament William Kabogo beat up the deceased girl at a party in Westlands.

The caretaker of Wasini Luxury Homes Charles Githinji told the inquest sitting in Nairobi that he saw Kabogo step on the girl before slapping her thrice as two girls and his bodyguards pleaded with him to stop the assault.

“He randomly slapped her – about three slaps. He angrily stepped on her as she lay on the floor crying. The two girls who were with them in the apartment were begging him to stop but he did not stop. The girls were screaming. The MP’s bodyguards did not touch the girl,” he recounted to the inquiry.

Githinji who explained that he was attracted to the two-bedroomed apartment on 3rd floor by loud noises said Kabogo handed out about Sh2,000 to his bodyguards and asked them to take Keino outside and get her a taxi to take her home.

“The bodyguards carried her. One was holding her legs while the other was holding her head and they took her outside the gate,” the inquest heard.

“The girl was bleeding from her mouth; Kabogo told me that she had hit herself against the wall. He took me to the bathroom and there was cotton wool and toilet papers soaked in blood. I could not ascertain if the girl had hit herself or not,” he asserted.

Githinji informed the inquest that Kabogo then gave him instructions to clean the blood stains.

Earlier, the caretaker said that Keino was drinking with one of Kabogo’s bodyguards who seemed not to enjoy her company. Later she became disorderly and threw a glass at the reception.

“The bodyguard she was drinking with pretended that he was calling the police so that she could stop misbehaving,” he testified.

Keino is said to have been drunk and out of control during the party. Her body was later to be found at the City mortuary.

An autopsy showed she died of injuries inflicted on her after a vehicle ran her over.

The inquest continues, with over 50 more witnesses expected to testify.
