K.O.T reacts to a costly 824k bride price ceremony ‘Ruracio’ budget

Marrying a Kenyan woman is increasingly becoming an expensive affair in these tough economic times especially after a bride price ceremony budget of 824,000 made rounds on social media.

A bride price ceremony budget became a bone of contention this week after a budget made rounds on social media, eliciting mixed reactions from Kenyans on Twitter.

The budget totalled Sh824, 000 for things like alcohol to escort the goats at the traditional bride price ceremony popularly known as Ruracio, cattle, clothes for the parents costed at 50,000, beer for clan elders at 20,000 as well as other household items like duvets and foodstuffs.

The large amount, however, did not include additional expenses like catering, fueling of vehicles, accommodation for guests travelling long distances and even the white wedding ceremony expenses.

Kenyans on Twitter could not keep calm and went ahead to make fun of the exorbitant bride price ceremony costs. One user exclaimed at the man’s misery who is still expected to fiancé the wedding, his life and support the parents. Another user joked that the dowry budget can pay Kenya’s debt to China. While another commented that the amount was enough to pay school fees and rent for a couple of years.

The question of how much parents should charge or ask for during bride price ceremonies has always been a subject of discussion and it’s definitely not the last time we will be hearing about something like this.
