Living legend

Hip-hop star and businessman, Shawn Corey Carter aka Jay-Z is steadily shifting his music career and navigating more towards movie production. The rapper, under Roc Nation, has signed a deal with ABC Studios to commence the production of a new series dubbed “Women of the Movement” which will premiere on ABC at a later announced date.

Jay-Z will be accompanied with ‘Aladin’ actor Will Smith who will executive produce the series with reference to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, and Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment respectively.

In a brief anecdote revealed by ABC Entertainment  “The series is a chronology of the civil rights movement as told from a black woman’s point of view, with the first season centered on Mamie Till, who devoted her life to seeking justice in her son Emmett’s name following his brutal murder in the Jim Crow South.”

The first season of the anthology is inspired by the book “Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement” by Devery S. Anderson.

The “Women of the Movement” series is being written by Marissa Jo Cerar who was behind popular TV shows including Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” and “The Fosters”.

In the production lineup, other producers in the show include; Jay Brown, Tyran Smith (Roc Nation), James Lassiter (Overbrook Entertainment); along with Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor from Kapital Entertainment; Rosanna Grace (Serendipity Film Group); Alex Foster and John Middleton (The Middleton Media Group). The anthology series is produced by Kapital Entertainment.

The “99 Problems” hit-maker who has made a name for himself in music with a career spanning over twenty years boasts of great success not only in the music business but also in the corporate world with huge investment in big firms which recently pushed him to the billionaire’s club. Jay also recently teamed up with  32-year-old rapper Meek Mill to create a new joint business venture, Dream Chasers – which has been created to find and develop new talent – under Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, as earlier reported by The Sauce.
