How To Keep Your Pets Safe While Entertaining

Throwing parties can be fun for your friends and family but they are often stressful for pets and they can become overexcited or stressed out by loud noises, bright lights that may not be familiar to them.

Some calm and social canines or curious cats will be fine hanging out with guests and enjoying all of the pats and treats. Other pets may feel overwhelmed when their spaces are taken over by strangers.

Here are some tips and tricks for keeping dogs and cats comfortable and well-behaved while you entertain.

Keep the leash on

When the doorbell keeps ringing and new people start pouring in, and you have a dog, make sure to introduce your pet slowly. It can be helpful to start your party with your dog on a leash and keeps lots of treats in your pocket and treat them whenever they have all feet on the floor as your guests arrive. Nervous pups can greatly benefit from wearing a harness, keeping them in their crates, or allowing them to go back to their safe spot especially if they’re still very young and aren’t used to people yet.

Watch food and drinks

Favorite party treats like chocolate baked goods, onion rings, and alcohol can upset your pet’s stomach or could be toxic. If your pet is likely to steal from guests, during the gathering, pay special attention to where guests set their drinks and make sure plates and cups are kept on surfaces that are high enough. Keep pets away from the buffet table as well as food that ends up in the trash.

Be your pet’s advocate

Let your party guests know you have pets in case they have allergies or are afraid of animals- this will make them be more mindful of their surroundings when they arrive. Be proactive and explain to your friends what kind of games your pets enjoy and establish a few ground rules- with regards to food because your pet will likely be in full force when it comes to begging. Request that guests do not dole out any treats to your pets even when those beautiful eyes are begging because this will make it less likely for your fur babies to accidentally consume something that isn’t good for them.

Create a safe space for them

If you have a shy four-legged friend, it’s important to have a pet-safe space for them to relax in. Before the party, dedicate a room away from the party noise to be a safe space- make sure they have everything they need such as food, water, toys, treats, litter box, and then close the door. You can lock the room or put a sign at the door asking your guests not to go in. Relaxed dogs won’t have any problem laying down wherever they please but it doesn’t hurt to keep tabs on how they’re feeling. Make sure your pet’s safe space is accessible, so they have a place to relax or hide out if they start getting overwhelmed.

These tips should help you focus on entertaining your guests without neglecting your fur babies. A well-thought-out plan goes a long way to helping keep your pets safe.
