David Avido started from humble beginnings, but now his name continues to fly the Kenyan banner high in the world of sustainable fashion.
The young designer, has had a strong affinity for all things beautiful and fashionable from a young age. Taking up the trade of tailoring clothes as a youngin’ in Kibera, he horned his skills out of necessity and developed a distinct sense of fashion that has propelled him to the limelight. And now international media is taking note.

Dressing the stars who visited Kenya with his one-of-a-kind Kenyan designs, Lookslike Avido as he is professionally known, is a force to be reckoned within the fashion industry. Speaking about his creations in the Vogue Italia feature which he shared on February 6th, Avido said, ” Things of beauty can come from places least expected. My designs are inspired by the elements.”

In a previous interview with Capital FM, David’s hopes to remain an inspiration for the underprivileged Kenyan youth. He said, “I am inspired by the streets, and I want youth to be their won bosses…if you plan well you can achieve what you want.” Focusing on sustainable fashion, Avido focuses on fashionable clothing that uses the classic Kenyan fabrics cut in new and exciting pieces. Avido boasts that his collection is wearable, and sustainable.
The former dancer and Buru Buru Institute of Fine Arts alumnus shares his journey in the multimedia feature on Vogue Italia this month. Avido is among very few Kenyan designers to break barriers through fashion with others such as Katungulu, Kiko Romeo by Anne McCreath, John Kaveke and Deepa Dosaja also making a name for themselves in the creative industry.
