Hitmaker Bensoul Names The Top Five Lyricists Who Inspire Him

Kenyan singer-songwriter Bensoul recently shared his top five lyricists, confidently placing himself at the top of the list.

His selection highlights the diverse talents that have shaped his musical journey and showcases the immense influence these songwriters have on the global music scene.

Bensoul has been a rising force in Kenya’s music industry, known for his seamless blend of modern and traditional sounds. His artistry is evident in tracks like “Favorite Song,” featuring Crystal Asige, which stands out as an uplifting anthem with a memorable melody. Another notable work is “Navutishwa,” a collaboration with Bien, where Bensoul’s ability to craft relatable and catchy lyrics is on full display, cementing his place as a lyrical powerhouse.

Second on his list is Bien-AimĂ© Baraza, widely known as Bien. As a key member of Sauti Sol, Bien is celebrated for his emotionally rich and relatable lyrics. His work on songs like “True Love,” which gained international attention after being performed on A COLORS SHOW, exemplifies his ability to connect with listeners on a deep level. “Ma Cherie” is another love song brimming with infectious charm, while “Too Easy,” a collaboration with DJ Edu, highlights Bien’s knack for creating impactful lyrics that resonate with fans across the globe.

Noteworthy tracks include “Send It,” featuring Bensoul and Namasaka, which showcases Ywaya’s talent for writing catchy and meaningful lyrics. His collaboration with Trio Mio on “Tunajienjoy” further demonstrates his ability to navigate multiple genres, effortlessly transitioning between afrobeat and hip-hop.

Fourth on the list is Wheeler Walker Jr., a figure who stands out in the outlaw country genre for his unapologetically bold and explicit lyrics. His provocative style has earned him a dedicated following, distinguishing him as a unique voice in country music.

Finally, Bensoul includes Theron Thomas, one-half of the duo R. City, who has penned hits across various genres. His songwriting prowess is evident in tracks like Lizzo’s “About Damn Time,” Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop,” and R. City’s “Locked Away” featuring Adam Levine. Theron’s ability to craft lyrics that transcend genres has solidified his reputation as one of the industry’s top songwriters.

Bensoul also acknowledges additional influences who have shaped his approach to songwriting. Max Martin, a pop music legend, is renowned for crafting numerous chart-toppers such as “…Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears, “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, and “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift. Another influence is Manana, an eSwatini-born artist whose work includes “Time Flies,” featuring Sauti Sol on Burna Boy’s Grammy-winning album Twice as Tall, and “Feel My Love” by Sauti Sol.
