The Aladdin remake which was released on the 24th of May 2019, has rubbed the box office lamp properly.
The live-action reboot of the hit 1992 animated film brought in an estimated $112.7 million at the North American box office over the weekend, according to estimates from Box Office Mojo, CNN reported.
That’s more than the studio’s projected $75 million to $85 million and makes it the fifth-highest Memorial Day weekend total ever.
Disney holds the record for the most box office receipts for the holiday, with 2007’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,’ which scared up $139 million.
‘Aladdin’ took a magic carpet ride to the head of the box office despite concern back in February when the trailer featuring American rapper and actor Will Smith as “Genie” had some worried that the film wouldn’t do justice to the beloved animated original.
‘Aladdin,’ directed by Guy Ritchie, also stars British actress Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Egyptian Canadian actor Mena Massoud as Aladdin. The movie has people impressed with its production and little tweaks to the original like Jasmine having her own song titled ‘Speechless’.
As reported by The Sauce, ‘Speechless,’ is a new Jasmine song created for the film by original ‘Aladdin’ composer Alan Menken with Oscar- and Tony-winning ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ and ‘La La Land’ composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, is an instant classic. It’s an of-the-moment ballad that has the potential to achieve ‘Let It Go’ levels of cultural cache.
‘John Wick: Chapter 3’, in its second weekend finished in second place with $31 million.
