Corona beer has suspended production during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Mexican brewing company Grupo Modelo will stop producing the alcoholic beverage, which is exported to 180 other countries.
It comes after the Mexican government ordered the suspension of non-essential activities due to the global health crisis. The brewer confirmed that it was already in the process of scaling down production before the suspension.
A statement read: “If the federal government considers it appropriate to issue some clarification confirming beer as an aggro-industrial product, at Grupo Modelo we are ready to execute a plan with more than 75 per cent of our staff working from home and at the same time guaranteeing the supply of beer.”
The drink’s unfortunate name has become a punchline during the pandemic, and the company last month hit out at “misinformation” which suggested that the brand had been damaged by the outbreak of the virus.
