The Kenyan creatives scene is on the path to revival and with it, more forms of expression are making into the public, offering Kenyans a variety of intriguing yet entertaining art to feed their souls. Lwanda Rockman is lauded as a must watch.
The play that is based on the life of local folklore character of Lwanda Magere is set to play from 14th to 23rd June at the Kenya National Theatre. The synopsis reveals a bitter rivalry between Lwanda Magere and his nemisis Konte. The summary reads, “After a thrilling victory in the battlefield, the ferocious Lwanda Magere finally cements his place as the greatest warrior who has ever lived. However, what seems to be a concluded victory in the flesh quickly transforms into a renewed battle of wit, heart, and soul.”
The Chatterbox production features a slew of actors including Ywaya Xavier as ‘Lwanda’, Alison Nyawira as ‘Chichi,’ Justin Mirichii as ‘Konte,’ Enock Maseru as ‘Commander,’ Steve Gitau as ‘Trooper,’ Valentine Njeru as ‘My Dear’, Pauline Kyalo and Ibrahim Muchemi as ‘Blood Sucker,’ Akinyi Oluoch as ‘Athola’and Audi Rowa as ‘Apita.’
The colorful artwork was worked on by the renowned Kenyan photographer Osbourne Macharia and features the talented cast; dressed up in traditional regalia and body art. Taking to Instagram to tease the upcoming play, Macharia revealed that the project has been ongoing for a few weeks. Captioning the powerful images, he wrote: “A few weeks ago I was commissioned to create Key Art for a local play based on the Kenyan legend Lwanda Magere titled #LwandaRockman taking place this month.” Seemingly proud of his work his followers were eager to congratulate the Cannes Lions 2018 Jury Member for his work. One commenter responded “So glad u r doing more work in Kenyan Theatre.”
