South Africa’s pop sensation Tyla and Nigerian Afrobeats powerhouse Ayra Starr are slated to perform at this year’s Global Citizen Festival, returning to New York City’s Central Park on September 27.
The artists who collaborated on the 2023 hit ‘Girl Next Door’, have seen remarkable success in recent years and. Tyla, 23, has become a global breakout star, with ‘Water’ topping charts and earning her numerous accolades, including a Grammy—making her the youngest African artist to win in her category. Ayra Starr, 23, meanwhile, has solidified her place as a leading voice in Afrobeats, earning critical acclaim and international chart success with her debut album 19 & Dangerous and collaborations with global artists.
The star-studded event will also feature headliners The Weeknd and Shakira, with actor Hugh Jackman, a long-time supporter of the cause, serving as host.
This annual festival supports Global Citizen’s ongoing campaign to end extreme poverty and address pressing global challenges. This year’s focus includes bringing electricity to one million people across Africa, providing quality education to 30,000 children globally, and preserving 30 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest. Additionally, the initiative aims to mobilize 40,000 volunteers throughout New York City.
