Africa university games comes to a close at UoN

The 7th All Africa University Games officially came to an end on 17th July 2014 at a closing ceremony held at the University of Nairobi (UoN) Sports Grounds, where more than 13 countries from different parts of Africa and 500 student athletes had participated.  The games that were competed include;  soccer, karate, netball, swimming, table tennis, track and field events, American football, and volleyball.

During the ceremony, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Arts, Dr. Hassan Wario said that he was delighted to have officiated the closing ceremony in corporation with the Local Organizing Committee. He noted that this was the 2nd time Kenya and in particular UoN, had hosted such an important event across the continent. He said that the government was at the forefront in partnering with universities to support sports activities. He informed those present that the Kenya Sports Act 2013 was now in place, and aimed at looking at sports as an economic activity, where sportsmen and women of this country can make a living from.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha, who was represented by Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Finance and Administration), Prof. P. Mbithi thanked FASU for choosing Kenya and UoN to host the 2014 intercontinental games. He saluted all teams for having have successfully participated in the games and urged them to keep up with the spirit of hard work thatthey had demonstrated throughout the tournaments. He hoped that all the participants from other African countries had enjoyed the hospitality they had received from UoN, and wished them all every best, as the games came to an end.

The FASU President, Dr. Ralethe Malumbete, thanked UoN for having had successfully hosted the games. He also thanked the media, sponsors, partners and all the people who had contributed in one way or the other, to make the event a big success.
