A Decade Of African Music, Culture, and Unity: Omena Celebration For A Better Future

The internationally acclaimed Madaraka Festival returns to Kenya to celebrate its 10 year anniversary by bringing a vibrant Omena Celebration to Kisumu City.

This year’s event, scheduled for December 14th, 2024 at Tom Mboya Labor College in the picturesque Kisumu City, promises to be even more impactful, blending music, culture, and a strong focus on building the Omena Train. The festival will highlight the powerful theme: “Fighting Hunger, Creating Awareness on Climate Change, and Promoting Access to Healthcare for all.”

About Madaraka Festival

Madaraka Festival is not just an African music festival; it’s a cultural celebration that brings together diverse audiences to experience the richness of African heritage. Since its inception in 2014, the festival has grown into one of the most anticipated cultural events, known for its ability to connect people, celebrate African artistry, and inspire change.

Why Partner with Madaraka?

  • ●  Decade of Musical Magic: Over the past decade, Madaraka Festival has showcased performances by renowned artists like Sauti Sol, Macklemore, D’banj, Rocky Dawuni, and Blitz the Ambassador, alongside emerging talents who bring fresh perspectives to the stage. This year’s lineup, soon to be announced, promises to continue this tradition of excellence.
  • ●  A Theme with Impact: This year, the festival’s theme, “Fighting Hunger, Creating Awareness on Climate Change, and Healthcare,” underscores its commitment to addressing critical issues. Through powerful performances, community-driven initiatives, and thought-provoking discussions, Madaraka Festival aims to drive meaningful change in these areas.

Spotlight on Omena: An Economic & Nutritional Powerhouse

Omena is the golden resource in Lake Victoria and research shows that Omena benefits non-locals and we are doing Madaraka Festival in Kisumu to ensure the biggest beneficiaries of Omena are those that reside along Lake Victoria. Support a sustainable future! A portion of ticket sales goes towards building the “Omena Train”, a locally sourced and fair-traded Omena brand empowering fishing communities. To fight hunger, the festival will highlight Omena —a small, nutrient-rich fish that plays a vital role in local diets around Lake Victoria. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to explore Omena dishes and culture, showcasing its importance in combating hunger in the region.

In addition, the festival will promote sustainable fishing practices to protect Omena populations, aligning with its climate change awareness efforts. By supporting responsible harvesting, Madaraka Festival advocates for the preservation of this critical food source for future generations.

Furthermore, the health benefits of Omena, which is rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, will be emphasized as part of the festival’s focus on healthcare. By promoting this local delicacy, the festival links improved nutrition to better health outcomes, particularly in communities that rely on this vital resource. Part of the proceeds from the festival will support the growth of Med25 International Kenya, which is a healthcare facility dedicated to empowering health and transforming lives by providing comprehensive and compassionate care that addresses the unique needs of the communities that live along the shores of Lake Victoria in Mbita, Kenya.

Madaraka Vibes Album and Exclusive Listening Parties

The festival also shines a spotlight on ‘Madaraka Vibes,’ the latest album by Madaraka CEO Simon Javan Okelo. Leading up to the festival, exclusive listening parties have been hosted in Radio City in Kisumu, Geco Cafe in Nairobi, and Alliance Française Nairobi. These intimate events offered fans a unique chance to connect with the founder of the Madaraka Festival and experience the new album firsthand.
