The United Kingdom’s monarchy marked 70 years of 95-year-old Queen Elizabeth II Sunday (06.02.2022), amid a towering change of guard where her “sincere wish” officially endorsed Camilla Parker Bowles to be Queen Consort.
Under the forthcoming dispensation, the heir apparent, Prince Charles is next on the throne and such makes Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Queen Consort, that is, the husband or wife to a reigning monarch. As the public reaction ebbs and flows, the rest of the world is reckoning with a new face of the head of the commonwealth, and again, the place of Camilla comes to the limelight.
Camilla has seen a royal elevation, from the puppy love that had faded away in their early twenties, to Princess Consort, then a senior royal, and hopefully now to be the Queen Consort. The hardly earned badge of honor comes after her seventeen-year marriage to Prince Charles. She was exposed to the public in 1999 and they did their nuptials in 2005. And yet, this may not bode well for revisionists. Camilla’s secret affair with Charles stained the monarchy and is often blamed for the breakdown of Prince Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana and its tragic end.
For the most part, she has tried to restore her image. She has pursued causes like animal rights activism, fighting against gender-based violence, and encouraging education programs in a bid to gain the public’s acceptance. With the Queen’s endorsement, she is grooming the public for a transition.
Seemingly, curtains are drawing for the world’s longest-ruling monarch. Tying up loose ends and preparing for an exit come out clear during Sunday’s Platinum Jubilee, her 70th Anniversary. Enter Camilla, the Queen Consort.
