5 Groups That Proves The 90s Was The Best Era For RnB

The 90s was a decade that changed everything in the music industry. Merging genres and infusing current influences, groups in the 90s were frontrunners is creating a new wave of music. A distinct sound, the music then still translates well to the present day. Here is a list of top RnB groups that changed the landscape of music forever.

 

1.Destiny’s Child

The group of beautiful, powerful women consisted of Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and Latoya Luckett who later left. The accomplished group formed in 1990 is known for choreographed dance moves and unique costumes that had all the boys drooling. During its time as a group, Destiny’s Child won a slew of awards including Grammy award for Best RnB Performance in 2001, 2002. Collaborating with different artists also brought a fresh sound to their tracks. Best known for songs such as “Say My Name,” “Bills, Bills, Bills” and more, the trio empowered women anthems for every occasion.

 

 

2.Boys II Men

4 men with strong vocals got into the musical scene in 1988. Known for their ballads, the group began as a group of boys that later turned into men. The group members included Shawn Stockman, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris as well as  Marc Nelson and Micheal McCary who left the group. With a number of Grammys under their belt including Grammy for Best RnB Album, the group has released 11 albums since their formation. They began their winning streak in 1992 by setting a record for longest running number one for the track “End of The Road”. Since the early 90s,  their success has been indicative of their influence on the music of the 90s.

 

 

3.TLC

The group that brought the world crazy sexy cool, Tionne”T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa”Left-Eye” Lopes and Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas revolutionized the definition of female RnB groups in the 90s. The Atlanta-based group has won several accolades including 5 Grammy awards and 5 Soul Train Awards. Known for their kinky lyrics, the group sought to empower the youth and used music as a vehicle for sex education for their young legion of fans.

 

 

4. B2K

Formed in 1998, this group took some elements of 90s RnB into the new millennium. Incorporating rap and typical RnB oohs and aahs, B2K won the hearts of many young girls. Made up of Omarion, Lil Fizz, J-Boog and Raz, the group had a quick rise to the top making chart-topping music until they broke up in 2004.

 

 

5.SWV

It seems three was the winning formula for RnB groups in the 90s. SWV was the golden trifecta formed in 1990 as a gospel group. The Sisters With Voices later went mainstream belting out RnB tunes that won them a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1994. With over 25 million records sold, the group of Chyrl “Coco” Gamble, Tamara “Taj” Johnson and Leeane “Leele” Lyons gave the iconic tracks of the 90s including “Weak,” “Rain” and “Right Here.”
