3 underrated August releases that prove the British-Naija collab wave are worth the hype

Afrobeats is one of Africa’s biggest musical genres finding prominence at home and abroad. The artists in this genre have become strategic with their releases, and one can’t help but notice a trend that has fuelled a Nigeria- United Kingdom nexus.

Here are 3 afrobeat tracks that should be on heavy rotation this weekend:

1. Jorja Smith featuring Burna Boy – Be Honest

Jorja Smith is having her best year yet, and so is Burna Boy. The two musical talents combined their efforts on the new release ‘Be Honest’. With a distinct afrobeat sound, Jorja tries something new, and who better to guide her than the ‘African Giant’ himself Burna Boy. The video is all sorts of 80s and 90s feels and is set to put anyone in a great mood. The release has 5 million so far on YouTube, but definitely deserves much more.

2. Kojo Funds  featuring Wizkid – I Like

Errol Bellot, a British grime rapper and singer collaborated with afrobeats star Wizkid on the release ‘I Like.’ The August release is full of swag, heavy beats, and beautiful women. The lyrics are simplistic, but sometimes that’s all you need to set things off. The London-based rapper has previously worked with some other major names inlcuding Yxng Bane and Stefflon Don among others. His latest collaboration could signal his entry into the African diaspora and later into the African market, garnering a larger following for his music. The track has only garnered a little over 1million views, but it’s clear that is should have way more.

3. Nonso Amadi featuring Mr. Eazi –  Go Outside

Singer-songwriter afrobeat RnB fusion act Nonso Amadi is a Nigerian born talent who shot to the stars after the success of his 2017 release ‘Tonight’. He collaborated with Banku music pioneer Mr. Eazi on the track ‘Go Outside.’ The track is an easy listen, and Amadi’s unique sound makes for an entertaining experience. Coupled with Eazi’s Naija references make for a great release. Amadi has worked with some big names including Maleek Berry, Juls and now Mr. Eazi. The 24-year-old is set to perform in Kenya on August 31st as part of his East Africa mini-tour. ‘Go Outside’ only has 28K views but is set to continue to gain more listenership after its August 19th release date.
