A total of 100 of the best Mathematics students in the country are set to compete for Degree scholarships in a newly launched scholarship scheme aimed at perfecting performance in Mathematics.

The 100 are county winners from a series of secondary school mathematics contests that began in March and are sponsored by Brookside Dairy and Strathmore University. They will converge at Strathmore University on the 10th October 2015 where the overall best boy and girl will each win a full scholarship to undertake a degree course at the University.

The two organizations have collaborated to launch the Scholarship scheme to be known as the annual Brookside Mathletes Challenge.

According to Brookside Dairy Marketing Manager Mr. Peter Wasonga, 10 counties that participated in the 2015 challenge identified the best 5 boys and 5 girls who have been invited for the national Grand Finale at Strathmore University.

The 100 are drawn from Machakos, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nairobi, Meru, Mombasa, Kakamega, Kiambu, Taita and Uasin Gishu counties. Other prizes at the Grand Finale include full scholarships to study Diploma courses in CPA or ACCA for the 1st and 2nd Runners-up, a cash token of Ksh. 150,000 for schools producing the top boy and top girl and 1-year school fees scholarships for Form 3 and 4 contestants at the country level contests.

Mr. Wasonga says the exercise will be expanded in future to cover all 47 counties and has invited other well-wishers to partner with them in the initiative. The Challenge aims to demystify Mathematics and help secondary school students improve performance in the subject so as to record better mean grades at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Schools Examinations.

Students and their schools have been invited to register and participate in the 2016 circuit as a school team of 10 students in any of the selected host schools in the county of their choice.

Host schools for 2016 are Meru School and Allidina Visram School in March, Kenya High, Machakos Girls and Moi High School-Kabarak in May and Mang’u High, Maseno School, Kakamega School, Kenya High and AIC Chebisaas School in June 2016.

There are plans to revive Kenya’s participation in the annual Africa Mathematics Olympiad and the Brookside Mathletes Challenge is an avenue to select a formidable team from Kenya to take on Africa’s best at the continental fete.
