Music’s biggest night is fast approaching and Kenyan stars have not been left out.
The nominations for the 64th edition of the Grammy Awards were announced earlier this week. Hundreds of well deserving artists were nominated in a total of 86 categories.
One of these categories is the Best Reggae Album which boasts of a stellar list of artists on the nominations. Jamaican Reggae singer Etana is nominated for her 2021 album ‘Pamoja’.
The album released on Boomplay Kenya on 25th of June 2021 and derives its name from the Swahili word ‘Pamoja’ meaning Together has been highly acclaimed. It features Kenyan artists Wyre, Naiboi and Michael Bundi in the songs The One, Legacy and Pamoja respectively.
Now, in light of Etana’s ‘Pamoja’ nomination, all collaborative artists are Grammy nominees as well. Meaning that Naiboi, Wyre, Michael Bundi as well as other collaborators on the album like Ghana’s Stonebwoy and Tanzania’s Nandy could very well win a Grammy should the album be voted as the Best Reggae Album.
Etana will be battling it out with Grammy award winning star Sean Paul for his work on ‘Live n Livin’, Grammy award winning artist from the group Morgan Heritage, Gramps Morgan for his album ‘Positive Vibration’, Queen of dancehall Spice with her debut album ’10’, Jesse Royal with ‘Royal’ and ‘Beauty In The Silence’ by SOJA.
Kenyan born American rapper Kayccy also landed a nomination from Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ album which has been nominated for Best Rap Album. The 23-year-old is featured on the track ‘Keep My Spirit Alive.’
In 2021, Kenyan boy band Sauti Sol and Sol Gerenation artist won Grammys for their work on Burna Boy’s album ‘Twice As Tall’ which won the Best Global Music album. Sauti Sol collaborated with Burna on the song ‘Time Flies’.
