University of Nairobi administration has come under fire recently following their statement on the security of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the memo dated (24.02.2020), by the Director of Security and Safety Services Maj (rtd) Simon Cherutich titled Cases of Robbery and Rape involving female students, the head of security at the learning institution blamed the female students for some of the rape incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cherutich said that there were three incidences, which were reported to his office in the recent past, which he said were all \u201cclear recklessness on the part of our female students can be drawn\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


He gave an example of how one of the students \u201chad entertained herself in various joints in the city and decided to walk all alone (drunk) from the city centre to the hostels at SWA\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u201cUnfortunately, she met her assailants next to KEMU building at around 0500 hours where she was assaulted and raped in turns by 3 men,\u201d lamented Cherutich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The statement has since gone viral on social media with many celebrities chiming in on the matter including rape survivor and former media personality Adelle Onyango who strongly condemned the varsity\u2019s stance on rape and assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c…A clear case of recklessness by our female students…\u201d \u201c…Rape involving female students…\u201d Those students are victims of rape not participants. No condemnation of the rapists. No mention of what the university will do in collaboration with police to ensure safety of its students. No. They, an entire institution would rather assign blame NOT on the rapists but on the victims and even expose one victims story where they assign blame to her! And then these \u201cTIPS\u201d y\u2019all keep throwing around at women. Right now, where we go, what time we will go there, who we will go with, how we will get there, what we will wear etc is governed by how safe we will be and that is NOT normal neither is it OK! If men just stopped raping us, rape will stop. This is what victim shaming looks like. This is what normalization of rape looks like. And we will not stand for it. PS: I\u2019m turning off my comments because there\u2019s always that one tone deaf triggering person and I\u2019m protecting my energy.<\/a><\/p>
