The donation will go towards supporting children affected by the Nepal earthquake disaster through the Nepal Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the secondary school, Mr Wheeler thanked students for having taken the challenge to raise funds for the families of Nepal. \u201cEnsuring our children our sensitized on current world affairs and continue to play their part as global citizens, is our aim for students at Hillcrest.\u201d said Mr Wheeler.<\/p>\n<p>Relief items will include: family kits, family tents, drinking water, cookery sets, hygiene kits and other basic necessities. Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society Abbas Gullet emphasised the need for human support during times of crisis. He further commended the students of Hillcrest for taking the initiative to respond to Nepal disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Nepal experienced extreme devastation within the span of six weeks, as two earthquakes rocked the country on 25<sup>th<\/sup> April and12<sup>th<\/sup> May respectively. The magnitude of the initial quake was recorded as 7.8 on the Richter scale. Following the first set of ravages, Nepal has suffered through a series of over one hundred earth shifts and tremors. According to UNOCHA, regions that have experienced the most devastation in the country are Gorkha, Kathmandu and Sindhupalchok.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative came as a result of Hillcrest Secondary School Parents Association (HSSPA) looking for a charitable cause to take on as the school year concluded. Following the international appeal raised for Nepal by the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), the Hillcrest community took on the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>This began by having Prep parent Mrs Rebecca Hill a former resident of Nepal, held talks at both the Prep and Secondary schools to raise awareness amongst the students.<\/p>\n<p>With support from respective teaching staff, the students then held a series of activities such as an Art Auction and Rounders Tournament in Secondary. The most notable of these activities was a sponsored Run and Swim activity held by prep students in Year 3, of which raised over Sh600, 000.
