As much as interracial relationships are now more or less acceptable, being in one can be one long journey. The hardships encountered in these types of relationships do not come from the couple themselves, but more often than not, the people around them. The world is not yet at a stage where interracial relationships are normal. To most, it is still weird, special and rebellious. Being a couple in an interracial relationship can be difficult anywhere in the world, but in Kenya or Africa, it becomes exhaustingly hard, especially if you are a woman. Here are some of the things interracial couples have been told or asked, as weird as they sound, these sorts of sayings or questions are common.<\/p>\n

1. Are your parents okay with this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Parents<\/a><\/p>\n

Are parents ever really okay with any relationship? Whether the relationship is interracial or not, getting a beau past your parents is a headache. So, apply this same logic. So, of course it is hard, but it really depends on the parents. Unlike the movies, not all parents react to the news as if a nuclear bomb went off.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0How do you communicate with such different cultures?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We communicate in the language of love and affection. Cultures are not a priority in a relationship. Unless the culture is so drastic that to date that person you need to cut off a left leg, then it shouldn’t really be an\u00a0 issue. Moreover, cultures do not simply apply to race, different families have different cultures. Culture is a set of belief and norms, so you might find that two people from completely different races with the same ‘culture.’<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong>\u00a0You think you are too good for your own race<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"black<\/a><\/p>\n

No, but I am definitely too good for your stupidity. If there was ever a statement that warrants a death penalty it is this one. Just because you date one race does not mean you hate your own race, everyone has a preference. It is really a matter of who you fall in love with.<\/p>\n

4. Is it because he\/she is rich?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Honestly, it is because they have clean nails. Seriously, just because a black, Asian or white woman or man, dates outside their race doesn’t mean that they are poor or gold diggers? If they happen to live in a castle with hundreds of butlers then that is a bonus. However, like any sort of relationship, you date someone because there is a connection. Moreover, anyone can be a gold-digger, it doesn’t just apply to interracial couples. Jay-Z’s 99 Problems<\/em> song was not about an interracial couple.
\n
\n5.\u00a0It is amazing how you don’t see skin color<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"couple\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Of course they see color, they are not blind (unless they are really blind). If someone is charcoal black or rice white, you notice, however the question is if you care. There are things that are more important in a relationship other than their skin color, like hygiene, humor, personality and toes. It is not that interracial couples don’t see color, it is simply that it is not a priority.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Your babies are going to look so adorable<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you start crushing\/dating someone, is it because you think your babies will look good? No but if it is, then that’s a problem for a therapist. As much as mixed babies are cute, it is not a 100 percent guarantee, genes are funny things. When two people start dating, babies are not something they even think about. So, do you think that interracial couples don’t take any protective measures during sex because their babies will be cute anyways?<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0Be honest, is your partner as [insert stereotype] as they say?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What? Loose? Aggressive? Drinker? Not well endowed down there? There is a reason stereotypes are not facts, they are offensive and most of them very untrue. Most people take them at face value and then start labeling different races according to those sweeping generalizations. In fact, there is also a stereotype that people who ask these sorts of questions are dumb but perhaps that is misplaced. Moreover, interracial relationship is not a social experience. Such questions make it seem as if by some chance the relationship ends, they are both required to write a reflective report.<\/p>\n

8.\u00a0Other people might judge, but what you are doing is amazing<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"trophy<\/a><\/p>\n

Dating a person from another race is not a phenomenon feat. They have not saved millions from hunger because they are in an interracial relationship. Some people think that those in an interracial relationship deserve some sort of humanitarian award. Interracial relationship are like any other; they are based on love and understanding, not a desire to bring world peace. A person doesn’t fall in love with another because their love is rare or unique. If so, people would fall in love and start with their furniture more often.<\/p>\n


\n9. I understand what you must be going through, I have also dated an [insert race]<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is no interracial couple club. Just because a person has dated someone from another race before doesn’t mean they now know about all other interracial relationships. Every relationship is different, every experience is unique. What happened in your relationship has nothing to do with this current one.<\/p>\n
