Weird World: Study reveals Men are less likely to wear face masks

Men in the US are less likely to wear face masks than women, according to a new study.

A report by researchers at Middlesex University and the Mathematical Science Research Institute in Berkeley, California has found men feel that wearing a mask to protect themselves against the coronavirus is “a sign of weakness”.

The study said: “Men more than women agree that wearing a face covering is shameful, not cool, a sign of weakness, and a stigma; and these gender differences also mediate gender differences intentions to wear a face covering.”

The study – which surveyed almost 2,500 people across the United States – also found that males believed they are less likely to be affected by COVID-19, despite medical evidence suggesting it kills more men than women.

Co-authors Valerio Capraro and Helene Barcelo wrote: “The fact that men less than women intend to wear a face covering can be partly explained by the fact that men more than women believe that they will be relatively unaffected by the disease.”
